A gear-type oil pump with an enclosed pressure regulator is driven by the oil pump drive. The oil pump drive is driven by the camshaft. Oil is drawn into the pump through a pickup screen and pipe submerged in oil in the oil pan.
Pressurized oil is routed to the oil cooler located by the radiator. A bypass valve is provided in order to protect the cooler from high oil pressures on cold start ups. Oil flows from the cooler to a full-flow oil filter.
Oil flows from the oil filter to the oil galleries, providing pressurized lubrication to various components, including the turbocharger. The hydraulic valve lifters receive oil from the oil galleries. Oil flows from the valve lifters through hollow valve pushrods to the valve rocker arms. Oil from the cylinder heads drains back to the crankcase through oil drain holes.
The pistons, piston rings, piston pin bushings, and cylinder walls are lubricated by oil splash.
