Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Support the rear axle independently in order to relieve the tension on the leaf springs.
- Remove the trailer hitch, if equipped. Refer to
Trailer Hitch Replacement.
- Remove the fuel tank, left side only. Refer to
Fuel Tank Replacement.
- Remove the U-bolt nuts.
- Remove the U-bolts and discard.
- Remove the spring spacer.
- Remove the anchor plate.
- Remove the rear leaf spring shackle bolts and nuts. Refer to
Spring Shackle Replacement.
- Remove the front bolt and nuts.
- Remove the leaf spring assembly from the vehicle.
Important: The following step is for replacement the shackle only. The shackle does not have to be replaced if removing the rear leaf to service other chassis or suspension components items.
- Remove the rear leaf spring shackle, if needed. Refer to
Spring Shackle Replacement.
Installation Procedure
- Install the leaf spring assembly to the vehicle.
- Install the front bolt and nuts but do not tighten.
- Install the rear leaf spring hanger to shackle nut and bolt.
Important: Do not reuse the U-bolts.
- Install the spring spacer.
- Install the U-bolts.
- Install the anchor plate.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the U-bolt nuts.
Tighten
• | For the 1500, tighten the nut to 100 N·m (74 lb ft). |
• | For the 2500/3500, tighten the U-bolt nut to 160 N·m (118 lb ft). |
- Tighten the front rear spring mounting nut
Tighten
Tighten the front nut to 200 N·m (148 lb ft).
- Tighten the rear leaf spring hanger to shackle nut and bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the shackle nut to 90 N·m (70 lb ft).
- Install the fuel tank. Refer to
Fuel Tank Replacement.
- Install the trailer hitch, if equipped. Refer to
Trailer Hitch Replacement.
- Remove the rear axle support.
- Remove the safety stands.
- Lower the vehicle.
