Attention: Proceed with the bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published Service Information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL - refer to Service Bulletin 04-00-89-053B for more detail on the use of Engineering Information bulletins.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a "Service Suspension System" message. The technician may also find that DTCs C0575.04 or C0580.04 are set. These codes are for the front dampers.

Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of this condition. Analysis of the Electronic Suspension Control (ESC) modules returned through the Warranty Parts Center has resulted in No Trouble Found.

DTCs set, C0575 & C0580 symptom 04, indicate an open circuit on the front damper (shock absorber). There is a connector on the top of the shock that can be loose or disconnected. If it is connected, the vehicle must be test driven with a scan tool diagnostic counter connected to determine if an input is being received from the damper actuator. If no signal is seen when driving over bumps, the damper (shock absorber) may need to be replaced.

Correction

DO NOT REPLACE THE ESC MODULE.

Use the following information to diagnose the customer's concern. When possible, note as much of the following information as possible on the repair order.

  1. What is the specific customer's concern?
  2. Check for codes. Document all DTCs on the repair order. If any DTCs other than C0575 or C0580 are set, diagnose and correct those concerns before proceeding with step 3.
  3. Complete steps 3-6 only if DTCs C0575 or C0580 were set. Inspect the electrical connector on top of the shock to make sure the connector is not loose, corroded/contaminated or damaged.
  4. Use the scan tool Special Function "Reset Diagnostic Counter" to bypass the three consecutive ignition cycle requirements.
  5. Drive the vehicle over bumpy surfaces and monitor the front damper actuator inputs.
  6. If there is a good signal and the DTC does not return, the correction has been corrected. Submit a Field Product Report (refer to Service Bulletin 02-00-89-002*).
  7. If there is no signal from the shock or intermittent signals, contact either of the engineers listed below:
