Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 26900-1 Outside Micrometer

  1. Siphon two-thirds of the fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.

  4. Object Number: 212409 Size: SH
  5. Position the C-clamp around the outer pad (3, 2) and caliper.

  6. Object Number: 212411 Size: MH
  7. Tighten the clamp until the piston (11) bottoms in its bore.

  8. Object Number: 172137 Size: SH
  9. Remove the brake hose E-clip (2).

  10. Object Number: 172761 Size: SH
  11. Remove the caliper carrier (2) by removing the two mounting bolts.

  12. Object Number: 172783 Size: SH
  13. Lift the caliper/caliper carrier (1), along with the brake pads, off of the rotor (2).

  14. Object Number: 172733 Size: SH
  15. Suspend the caliper/caliper carrier (1) with a wire (2) in order to prevent damage to the brake hose.

  16. Object Number: 172176 Size: SH
  17. Measure the rotor (1) thickness using J 26900-1 . Replace the rotor if the rotor thickness is less than the following specifications:
  18. • 2-Door: 8.0 mm (0.315- in).
    • 4-Door: 15.0 mm (0.590 in).

    Object Number: 172787 Size: SH
  19. Remove the brake rotor (1) from the wheel hub. If the rotor cannot be removed by hand, install two 8 mm bolts (2) into the rotor. Tightening the bolts will force the rotor off of the wheel hub.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the brake rotor to the wheel hub.

  2. Object Number: 172761 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Place the caliper/caliper carrier (2) into position. Secure the caliper/caliper carrier with two caliper carrier mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the caliper carrier mounting bolts to 88 N·m (65 lb ft).

    Object Number: 172137 Size: SH
  5. Install the brake hose E-clip (2).
  6. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Fill the master cylinder fluid reservoir. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
