Is the generator/coolant pump drive belt loose or missing?

Inspect the front of the radiator.

Are there dirt, leaves, insects on the front of the radiator?

Clean the front of the radiator.

Is there leakage in the following areas?

    • Hoses
    • Coolant Pump
    • Heater
    • Thermostat Housing
    • Radiator
    • Core plugs
    • Head gaskets

Repair as necessary.

Check the thermostat.

Is the thermostat faulty?

Replace the thermostat.

Go to Step 6

Check the ignition timing.

Is the ignition timing retarded?

Set the timing. Refer to Engine Controls.

Check the cylinder head torque.

Is the cylinder head torque incorrect?

Re-tighten the cylinder head bolts to specification. Refer to Engine Mechanical--1.6 Liter L4. Replace the cylinder head gasket if required.

Check the intake manifold.

Is the intake manifold leaking?

Repair the intake manifold or replace components as necessary to correct the leak.

Check the cylinder head gasket.

Is the cylinder head gasket leaking?

Make repairs or replace components as necessary to correct the leak.

Check the cylinder block plug.

Is the cylinder block plug leaking?

Check the heater core.

Is the heater core leaking?
