Inspection Procedure

  1. Start the engine with the manual selector in the PARK position.
  2. Note any abnormal vibration while engine is at idle.
  3. Move the shift selector to NEUTRAL and note any abnormal vibration.
  4. Return the shift selector lever to the PARK position.
  5. Turn the ignition switch off.
  6. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. Remove the following items from the 03-72LE, 4-Speed:
  8. • The two flywheel inspection cover bolts
    • The four bolts from one case left stiffener
    • The flywheel inspection cover
  9. Remove the three flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
  10. Rotate the torque converter 120 degrees (1/3 turn).
  11. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  12. Install the three flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
  13. Tighten
For the 03-72LE, 4-speed tighten the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  14. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  15. Secure the flywheel inspection cover with two bolts.
  16. Tighten
Tighten the flywheel inspection cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb ft).

  17. Install the left case stiffener.
  18. Secure the left case stiffener with four bolts.
  19. Tighten
Tighten the left case stiffener bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  20. Install the flywheel inspection plug for the 03-72LE, 4-speed.
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Start the engine with the manual selector in the PARK position.
  23. Repeat this procedure until the best possible balance is obtained if any abnormal vibration still exists.
