The double tube type tilt steering column includes the following three functions in addition to the steering function:

  1. In a front-end collision, the column is energy absorbing, designed to collapse in order to minimize driver injury.
  2. The steering column lock and ignition switch cylinder is column mounted, allowing the steering column and the ignition switch cylinder to be locked, minimizing the chance of vehicle theft.
  3. The steering column levers control the turn signal, the headlamp switch, the headlamp dimmer switch, the windshield wiper switch, the windshield washer switch, and the cruise control switch, if equipped.

In order to ensure the energy-absorbing action, use only the specified bolts and nuts and tighten to the specified torque. Apply a thin layer of grease to all friction points during assembly. Carefully handle the column during removal. Using a steering wheel puller other than the recommended, or dropping/striking/leaning on the column, can shear or loosen the plastic fasteners that keep the column rigid.
