Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the outer tie rod. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 461896  Size: SH
  4. Remove the boot (3). Refer to Steering Gear Boot Replacement - On Vehicle .

  5. Object Number: 461905  Size: SH
  6. Unstake the lock washer (2).
  7. Remove the inner tie rod (1) from the rack (3).

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.


    Object Number: 461923  Size: SH
  1. Install a new lock washer (2) and inner tie rod (1) to the rack.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the inner tie rod to 85 N·m (61.5 lb ft).

  3. Stake the lock washer at the flat spots on the inner tie rod.

  4. Object Number: 461896  Size: SH
  5. Install the boot (3). Refer to Steering Gear Boot Replacement - On Vehicle .
  6. Install the outer tie rod. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
  7. Lower the vehicle.
