Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 470547  Size: SH

    Caution: Avoid taking the following actions when you service wheel brake parts:

       • Do not grind brake linings.
       • Do not sand brake linings.
       • Do not clean wheel brake parts with a dry brush or with compressed air.
    Some models or aftermarket brake parts may contain asbestos fibers which can become airborne in dust. Breathing dust with asbestos fibers may cause serious bodily harm. Use a water-dampened cloth in order to remove any dust on brake parts. Equipment is available commercially in order to perform this washing function. These wet methods prevent fibers from becoming airborne.

  3. Remove the shoe hold down pins (1) in order to release the shoe hold down springs (2).
  4. Remove the shoe hold down springs.

  6. Remove the following components:
  7. • The upper return spring (1)
    • The strut
    • The strut spring (3)
    • The pawl lever (6)
    • The lower return spring (4)

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 470551  Size: SH

    Important: Apply Lubriplate® Lubricant, GM P/N 1050109 (Canadian P/N 5264008), or the equivalent white lithium grease, to all of the brake component metal contact points (where the brake shoe metal contacts the backing plate, the wheel cylinder, the adjustment strut, etc.) prior to installation.

  1. Install the following components:
  2. • The upper return spring (1)
    • The strut
    • The strut spring (3)
    • The pawl lever (6)
    • The lower return spring (4)

  3. Install the shoe hold down springs (2). Turn the shoe hold down pins (1) in order to secure the shoe hold down springs.
  4. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
