J 1859-A Steering Wheel
Puller
Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SIR system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System. |
- Disable the SIR System.
Refer to
Disabling the SIR System
in
SIR.
- If you are NOT removing the steering column, ensure the front
wheels and tires are in the straight ahead position
- Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement
in SIR.
- Remove the steering shaft
nut (2).
- Use paint in order to
place alignment marks (2) on the steering wheel and on the steering
shaft. Use these marks as a guide during installation.
Notice: Do not use any steering wheel puller or side screws other than those
recommended as the SIR coil assembly is easily damaged if the correct tools
are not used.
- Using the J 1859-A
in
order to remove the steering wheel (1).
Installation Procedure
- If you DID replace the steering column, ensure the front wheels
and tires did not move.
- If you DID NOT replace the steering column, ensure the front wheels
and tires are aligned in the straight ahead position.
- If necessary, center the inflatable restraint steering wheel module
coil. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle
.
- If you are replacing the
steering wheel, use paint in order to place alignment marks (2) on
the new steering wheel in the same position as on the old steering wheel.
Notice: When installing the steering wheel, ensure that the 2 tabs on
the SIR coil align with the 2 slots on the steering wheel
mounting surface. Failure to align the tabs may cause incorrect alignment
of some components during installation. This may damage the SIR coil.
- Install the steering wheel (3) to the steering shaft. Fit the
2 tabs on the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil (5)
into the 2 slots in the back of the steering wheel (4).
Align the marks (1) on the steering wheel and on the steering
shaft.
- Ensure the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position when
the tires and wheels are in the straight ahead position.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the steering
shaft nut (2).
Tighten
Tighten the steering shaft nut to 33 N·m (23.5 lb ft).
- Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module to the
steering wheel. Refer to
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement
in SIR.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
Enabling the SIR System
in SIR.
