- Partially raise and support the vehicle in order to allow the front
tires to turn freely. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Disconnect the power steering fluid reservoir inlet hose (5)
from the reservoir.
- Position the hose toward a drain pan or suitable container to
catch the draining fluid.
- Drain power steering fluid.
- Plug the reservoir inlet port on the underside of the reservoir (6).
Notice: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the
proper power steering fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose
and seal damage and fluid leaks.
- Fill power steering reservoir with new DEXRON ®-III
Automatic Transmission Fluid, GM P/N 12346143, (Canadian P/N 10952622)
or equivalent.
Important:
• | This step may require up to 4 liters (4 quarts) of fluid. |
• | Add fluid to the reservoir in order to maintain the fluid level at
the MIN mark (3). |
• | Add fluid until the draining fluid is the same color and condition
as the new fluid. |
• | DO NOT run the engine without some fluid in the power steering fluid
reservoir. |
- START and run the engine at 1,000 RPM. After one or two seconds,
power steering fluid will begin to discharge from the power steering gear
outlet hose.
- When the draining fluid is the same color and condition as the
new fluid, turn the engine OFF.
Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops while flushing the
power steering system. Holding the steering wheel against the wheel stops
will cause high system pressure, overheating, and damage to the power steering
pump and/or gear.
- Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop.
- Remove the plug from the reservoir.
- Install the power steering fluid reservoir inlet hose (5)
to the reservoir.
- Secure the hose with the hose clamp.
- START the engine.
- Maintain the power steering fluid level with the engine idling.
- Turn the engine OFF.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
- Lower the vehicle.
