2.5 LE8 Engine Intermittent No or Hard Start - kw cold crank driveability low nostart oil PQC temperature

Subject: 2.5L LE8 Engine Intermittent No or Hard Start

Models:.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:

  1. Intermittent hard or no start.
  2. Engine cranks over very fast / freewheels as if there is low or no compression.
  3. This condition typically occurs during cold ambient temperatures of 40 degrees F and below.
  4. Once the engine is started, compression returns to normal and the engine runs fine.
  5. Traces of oil may be found in the:
  6. A. Intake manifold runners

    B. Front intake crossover pipe.

    C. Throttle body.

Recommendation/Instructions:

If the engine cranks over very fast like there is no compression, and traces of oil are found in the intake manifold runners, front intake crossover pipe or the throttle body, try to get the vehicle started and perform the following: Note: The vehicle may be started by letting the vehicle sit indoors to warm up and applying the throttle while trying to start the engine or manually freeing up the valves with shop air so they seal and then attempting to start it.

  1. Run the aerosol version of Top Engine Cleaner through the engine and let it soak overnight. Run the TEC through the brake booster vacuum supply line which runs to the left valve cover. IMPORTANT: Follow the procedures on the can when using TEC. Do not force the engine to stall by forcing cleaner into the engine at low rpm. Hydrostatic lock may result causing severe engine damage if the procedures are not followed.
  2. Replace the oil and filter. Use only the recommended oil and filter and amount as outlined in the owners manual or published service information. IMPORTANT: The engine oil capacity with a new filter is 5.8 quarts. With the correct amount of oil, the oil level may not reach the "full" level mark. DO NOT top off to get the oil to the "full" level mark. This will result in an overfill condition.
  3. Run the engine to operating temperature to fully circulate the oil. Turn the engine off and allow a minimum of 5 minutes for the oil to fully drain back. The oil level will be somewhere between the low and high level holes. Check the oil level and scribe the dipstick. Instruct the owner not to fill above the scribe mark.

.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
