Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect
the negative battery cable (1).
- Remove the cooler lines.
- Remove 1 electrical connector from the transmission range
switch (1).
- Remove the following components from the manual shaft:
• | The manual lever with cable attached |
- Unstake the lock plate behind the manual shaft nut.
- Remove the manual shaft nut and the lock plate from the transmission
range switch.
- Remove 1 bolt and the transmission range switch from the
manual shaft.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Attach the lock
washer and the set nut.
- Install the transmission range switch (1) to the transmission
by doing the following steps:
1.1. | Turn the manual shaft rearward. |
1.2. | Turn the manual shaft back 2 notches and set the manual
shaft to the NEUTRAL range. |
1.3. | Attach the transmission range switch to the transmission. |
1.4. | Secure the transmission range switch with 1 bolt. Do not
tighten the bolt fully. |
Tighten
Tighten the transmission range switch set nut to 5 N·m
(44 lb in).
- Bend the claws of the lock washer over the set nut.
- Tighten the transmission range switch retaining bolt with the
neutral reference line (2) and the cut out (3) in the transmission
range switch aligned.
Tighten
Tighten the transmission range switch bolt to 5 N·m (44 lb in).
- Attach the manual lever to the manual shaft with the cable attached.
- Secure the manual lever with 1 washer and 1 nut.
Tighten
Tighten the manual shaft lever nut to 13 N·m (115 lb in).
- Attach the negative battery cable.
- Apply the parking brake and block the vehicle wheels.
- Turn the ignition switch to START with the manual selector lever
in the PARK position.
- Verify that the starter motor operates.
- Stop the engine.
- Place the ignition switch in the ON position.
- Move the shift selector lever from the PARK to the NEUTRAL position.
- Turn the ignition switch to the START position.
- Verify that the starter motor operates.
- Verify that the starter motor DOES NOT operate in the D, 2, L,
or R positions.
