Water Pump Replacement 1.6L Engine

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley (1). Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.

  5. Object Number: 590972  Size: SH
  6. Remove the timing belt (1). Refer to Timing Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.

  7. Object Number: 262564  Size: SH
  8. Remove the timing belt tensioner and tensioner plate (1).
  9. Remove the oil level indicator guide tube.

  10. Object Number: 262421  Size: SH
  11. Remove the rubber seals (1) from the water pump.

  12. Object Number: 466439  Size: SH
  13. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts.
  14. Remove the water pump (1) and gasket (2) from the vehicle.
  15. Clean the water pump gasket mating surface.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 466439  Size: SH
  1. Install the new gasket (2) to the engine block (3).
  2. Install the water pump (1).
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Secure the water pump with mounting nuts and bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump mounting nuts and bolts to 13 N·m (115 lb in).

  6. Install new rubber seals (1) to the water pump.
  7. Install the oil level indicator guide tube.

  9. Install the timing belt tensioner (2). Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Installation in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.

  10. Object Number: 590972  Size: SH
  11. Install the timing belt (1). Refer to Timing Belt Installation in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.

  12. Object Number: 177841  Size: SH
  13. Install the crankshaft pulley (1). Refer to Crankshaft Pulley Replacement in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.
  14. Refill the engine cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the battery cable retainer to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  17. Road test the vehicle. Ensure that the coolant level is correct and that there are no leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 2.0L Engine

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.

  3. Drain the engine cooling system (1). Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Generator and Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 2.0L.

  5. Object Number: 488773  Size: SH
  6. Remove the radiator outlet hose (1) from the thermostat housing.
  7. Remove the 1 bolt and the heater outlet line from the rear of the water pump housing.
  8. Important: Do not discharge nor remove the A/C lines.

  9. Remove 3 bolts and the A/C compressor from its mounting bracket. Position the A/C compressor aside.

  11. Remove the 4 bolts and the water pump pulley from the water pump.
  12. Remove the 3 bolts and the thermostat housing from the water pump housing.
  13. Remove the 4 bolts (2) and the water pump from the vehicle.
  14. Remove the dowel pins from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the dowel pins to the water pump.
  2. Install a new O-ring to the water pump and to the heater outlet line.

  3. Object Number: 466462  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: Use new bolts when installing the water pump. Failure to do so may result in leakage.

  4. Install the water pump using 4 new bolts (2).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  6. Install the A/C compressor to its mounting bracket.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the 3 bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  8. Install the 1 bolt and the heater outlet line to the rear of the water pump housing.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  10. Install the 4 bolts and the water pump pulley to the water pump.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  12. Install the 3 bolts and the thermostat housing to the water pump housing.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  14. Install the radiator outlet hose (1) to the thermostat housing.
  15. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Generator and Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 2.0L.
  16. Refill the engine cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the battery cable retainer to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  19. Road test the vehicle. Ensure that the coolant level is correct and that there are no leaks.

Water Pump Replacement 2.5L Engine

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.5L.
  3. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  4. Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.5L.

  6. Remove the water pump bolts (1) and the water pump (2).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install new O-rings (1) to the water pump (2).

  3. Insert the water pump (2) to the cylinder block.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts (1) to  27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  5. Install the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement in Engine Mechanical-2.5L.
  6. Refill the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  7. Refill the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement in Engine Mechanical--2.5L.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Check the systems for leaks.
