Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the oil level indicator.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the front skid plate from the vehicle (if equipped).
  4. Remove the front axle assembly from the chassis (4WD only). Refer to Front Axle Housing Replacement in Front Drive Axle.
  5. Remove the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement in Power Steering.
  6. Drain the engine oil.

  8. Remove the 4 bolts and the right side engine block-to-transmission support bracket (3).
  9. Remove the flywheel cover.

  10. Object Number: 464723  Size: SH
  11. Remove the 16 bolts and the 2 nuts from the lower cylinder block.
  12. Notice: Do not damage the oil pan contact surface of the lower cylinder block when removing the oil pan.

  13. Carefully remove the engine oil pan.
  14. Remove the 3 bolts and the oil pump strainer.
  15. Clean the following components:
  16. • The inside of the engine oil pan
    • The oil pump strainer screen
    • The mating surfaces of the engine oil pan and the lower cylinder block

Installation Procedure

  1. Install new O-rings and install the oil pump strainer to the oil pump.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install and tighten the 2 strainer bolts first and then the bracket bolt.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the 3 bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  5. Apply a continuous bead of silicon sealant (1) GM P/N 12345997, or an equivalent, to the engine oil pan mating surface.

  6. Object Number: 464723  Size: SH
  7. Install the engine oil pan. Secure with the 16 bolts and 2 nuts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the engine oil pan bolts and nuts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  9. Install the engine oil gasket and drain plug.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the engine oil drain plug to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).

  11. Install the flywheel cover.

  13. Install the right side engine block-to-transmission support bracket (3).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the engine block-to-transmission support bracket bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  15. Install the front axle assembly to the chassis on four wheel drive vehicles. Refer to Front Axle Housing Replacement in Front Drive Axle.
  16. Fill the differential on four wheel drive vehicles. Refer to Lubricant Level Check in Front Drive Axle.
  17. Install the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement in Power Steering.
  18. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding in Power Steering.
  19. Install the front skid plate to the vehicle (if equipped).
  20. Install the oil level indicator.
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
  23. Inspect for correct engine oil level and pressure, and for fluid leaks.
  24. Adjust the front toe-in. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment in Wheel Alignment.
