- Remove the front axle assembly from the chassis (4WD only). Refer
to
Front Axle Housing Replacement
in
Front Drive Axle.
- Remove the steering gear. Refer to
Steering Gear Replacement
in Power Steering.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the 4 bolts and
the right side engine block-to-transmission support bracket (3).
- Remove the flywheel cover.
- Remove the 16 bolts
and the 2 nuts from the lower cylinder block.

block |
Installation Procedure
- Install new O-rings and
install the oil pump strainer to the oil pump.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install and tighten
the 2 strainer bolts first and then the bracket bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the 3 bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).
- Apply a continuous bead
of silicon sealant (1) GM P/N 12345997, or an equivalent,
to the engine oil pan mating surface.
- Install the engine oil
pan. Secure with the 16 bolts and 2 nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the engine oil pan bolts and nuts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).
- Install the engine oil gasket and drain plug.
Tighten
Tighten the engine oil drain plug to 35 N·m (26 lb ft).
- Install the flywheel cover.
- Install the right side
engine block-to-transmission support bracket (3).
Tighten
Tighten the engine block-to-transmission support bracket bolts to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the front axle assembly to the chassis on four wheel drive
vehicles. Refer to
Front Axle Housing Replacement
in Front Drive Axle.
- Fill the differential on four wheel drive vehicles. Refer to
Lubricant Level Check
in Front Drive Axle.
- Install the steering gear. Refer to
Steering Gear Replacement
in Power Steering.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
in Power Steering.
- Install the front skid plate to the vehicle (if equipped).
- Install the oil level indicator.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Fill the crankcase with engine oil.
- Inspect for correct engine oil level and pressure, and for fluid
leaks.
- Adjust the front toe-in. Refer to
Front Toe Adjustment
in Wheel Alignment.
