Removal Procedure
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, place a drain pan or suitable container underneath the transfer case. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid.

  3. Place index marks on the pinion flange yoke and the differential pinion flange.
  4. Remove the 4 bolts (1) and 4 nuts holding the yoke. Separate the pinion flange yoke from the differential pinion flange.
  5. Remove the sliding yoke from the transfer case. Remove the propeller shaft (1) from the vehicle.
  6. Inspect the propeller shaft for dents or other damage. Replace the shaft if the shaft is damaged.
  7. Inspect the universal joints for smooth pivoting. If the universal joints bind or appear tight, replace the universal joints as assemblies. Refer to Universal Joint Replacement .
  8. Inspect the sliding yoke splines (1) for excessive wear or damage. If the splines (1) appear worn or rounded, replace the sliding yoke (3). Refer to Universal Joint Replacement .

  9. Inspect the sliding yoke surface for the following:
    10. • Scoring
    • Burrs
    • Other damage
    • If the sliding yoke surface appears scored or rough, replace the sliding yoke. Refer to Universal Joint Replacement .
  10. Inspect the pinion flange yoke for the following:
    11. • Cracks
    • Distortion
    • Other damage
    • If the pinion flange yoke appears damaged or distorted, replace the pinion flange yoke. Refer to Universal Joint Replacement .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the sliding yoke into the transfer case.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the pinion flange yoke to the differential pinion flange (1) aligning index marks on the pinion flange yoke and differential pinion flange. Secure the pinion flange yoke with 4 bolts and the 4 nuts.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the propeller shaft bolts and nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

    If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, apply GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transfer case drain plug.

  3. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case drain plug into the transfer case.

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the transfer case drain plug to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  4. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, refill the transfer case with approximately 1.7 liters (1.8 quarts) of 75W90 GL4 synthetic lubricant GM P/N 12346190 (Canadian P/N 10953477), or equivalent.
  5. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, apply GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480), or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transfer case oil level filler plug.
  6. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, install the transfer case oil level/filler plug into the transfer case.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the transfer case oil level/filler plug to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  7. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the drain pan from underneath the transfer case.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
