Removal Procedure

The exhaust system is serviced as a complete assembly.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Notice: To prevent internal damage to the flexible coupling of the catalytic converter assembly, the converter must be supported. The vertical movement at the rear of the catalytic converter assembly must not exceed 6 degrees up or down.

  3. Support the three-way catalytic converter.
  4. Disconnect the trim height sensor link. Refer to Automatic Level Control Sensor Link Replacement in Automatic Level Control.
  5. Support the tie rod.
  6. Disconnect the tie rod. Refer to Tie Rod Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  7. Lower the support and the tie rod.
  8. Remove the catalytic converter nuts.
  9. Disconnect the hanger insulators from the rods welded to the exhaust system.
  10. Remove the exhaust system.
  11. Remove the exhaust system supports and carefully pull the exhaust system towards the front of the vehicle and over the rear suspension.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install a new catalytic converter gasket.
  2. Position the exhaust system under the vehicle.
  3. Carefully push the exhaust system towards the rear of the vehicle and over the rear suspension.
  4. Support the exhaust system.
  5. Connect the hanger insulators to the rods welded to the exhaust system.
  6. Install the tie rod. Refer to Tie Rod Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  7. Connect the trim height sensor link. Refer to Automatic Level Control Sensor Link Replacement in Automatic Level Control.
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the catalytic converter nuts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the catalytic converter nuts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  11. Lower the vehicle.
