The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Dealers may comment on a large, repeat rear main oil seal leak. Concern may not be easily duplicated while vehicle is idling, and leak may only be prevalent while vehicle is being driven.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Rear main bearing may exhibit excessive clearance. Clearance may be caused by excessive bearing wear. Condition may be aggravated by high-end engine RPM limitations related to valve spring oscillation/float as described in TSB 05-06-01-036.

Correction

  1. Verify engine oil is at proper level and not overfilled.
  2. Verify proper operation of the crankcase PCV system.
  3. Replace rear main bearing.
  4. Replace rear main seal following TSB # 05-06-01-19B, and utilizing the new service tool described in this bulletin.
  5. Replace all valve springs using P/N 12599294 as detailed in TSB # 05-06-01-036.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
