Input Clutch Housing End Play Check FWD Only

    Object Number: 10544 Size: SH
  1. Adjust the collar on tool J 33381-A remover and installer to the 4T65-E CLUTCH & DRUM setting.

    2. Object Number: 10551 Size: SH
  2. Install J 33381-A remover and installer into the input clutch housing assembly (632).
  3. Tighten the threaded rod of J 33381-A remover and installer until the rod is finger tight.
  4. Use J 33381-A remover and installer in order to lift the input clutch housing assembly (632). The sprag clutch assemblies will also be attached.
  5. Install the assembly (632) into the case. Be sure that the assembly is down all the way.
  6. Remove J 33381-A remover and installer from the assembly.

    Note: The tool J 38385 loading tool adapter  (3) is used on a standard duty transmission, and J 43425 loading tool adapter  (3) is used on a heavy duty transmission.

  7. Install J 38385 loading tool adapter  (3) for a standard duty transmission or J 43425 loading tool adapter  (3) for a heavy duty transmission.

    8. Note: The tool J 26958-10B adapter plug  (2) is model specific and can be used on a standard duty and a heavy duty transmission. This tool has a small end (4) and a larger end (5). Standard duty would use the smaller end (4) facing down, and a heavy duty would use the larger end (5) facing down.

  8. Install J 26958-10B adapter plug  (2) depending on model. Stadard duty uses this tool with the smaller end (4) facing down. Heavy duty uses this tool with the larger end (5) facing down.

    9. Note: Install bolts and tighten securely to prevent tool deflection during end play measurement.

  9. Install J 26958 loading and aligning tool  (1) onto the case extension (6).

  10. Using two bolts, install J 33386-A end play tool onto the case.
  11. Tighten the bolts in order to securely hold J 33386-A end play tool .
  12. Tighten J 26958 loading and aligning tool finger tight in order to eliminate differential carrier end play.

    13. Object Number: 417965 Size: SH
  13. Insert the thrust washer (630) from the input clutch housing into J 33386-A end play tool as indicated. If the thrush washer will not fit into J 33386-A end play tool , select the next size smaller thrust washer and recheck.
  14. Use a feeler gage in order to measure the clearance between J 33386-A end play tool and the thrust washer (630).
    15. • If the clearance is less than 0.1521 mm (0.006 in), use the current size thrust washer.
    • If the clearance is 0.1521 mm (0.006 in) or more, select the next size larger thrust washer and recheck.
    • Refer to the Bearing/Input Clutch Hub Selective Thrust Washer (630) Selection Guide in End Play Specifications .

  15. Remove J 33386-A end play tool .
  16. Adjust the collar on tool J 33381-A remover and installer to the 4T65-E CLUTCH & DRUM setting. Make sure that the threaded rod is fully loosened.
  17. Install J 33381-A remover and installer into the input clutch housing (632).
  18. Tighten the threaded rod of J 33381-A remover and installer until the rod is finger tight.
  19. Use J 33381-A remover and installer in order to lift the input clutch housing assembly (632). The sprag clutch assemblies will also be attached.
  20. Remove the assembly (632) from the case.

  21. Position the transmission so that the oil pan is facing down.
  22. Remove J 26958 loading and aligning tool  (1), J 26958-10B adapter plug  (2), and J 38385 loading tool adapter  (3) or J 43425 loading tool adapter  (3).

Input Clutch Housing End Play Check F4WD Only

    • J 44472 End Play Checking Tool

  1. Install the final drive sun gear shaft (689).

    2. Object Number: 630822 Size: SH
  2. Use J 36850 lubricant or equivalent in order to retain the parking gear thrust bearing (695) to the parking gear (696).
  3. Install the parking gear thrust bearing (695) and the parking gear (696).

    4. Object Number: 677375 Size: SH
  4. Install the final drive sun gear (697).

    5. Object Number: 677377 Size: SH

    Note: Install bolts and tighten securely to prevent tool deflection during end play measurement.

  5. Install J 44472 end play checking tool .

  6. Adjust the collar on tool J 33381-A final drive remover and installer to the 4T65-E CLUTCH& DRUM setting.

    7. Object Number: 10551 Size: SH
  7. Install J 33381-A final drive remover and installer into the input clutch housing assembly (632).
  8. Tighten the threaded rod of J 33381-A final drive remover and installer until the rod is finger tight.
  9. Use J 33381-A final drive remover and installer in order to lift the input clutch housing assembly (632). The sprag clutch assemblies will also be attached.
  10. Install the assembly (632) into the case. Be sure that the assembly is down all the way.
  11. Remove J 33381-A final drive remover and installer from the assembly.

    12. Object Number: 417964 Size: SH
  12. Using two bolts, install J 33386-A end play tool onto the case.
  13. Tighten the bolts in order to securely hold J 33386-A end play tool .
  14. Tighten J 44472 end play checking tool finger tight in order to eliminate differential carrier end play.

    15. Object Number: 417965 Size: SH
  15. Insert the thrust washer (630) from the input clutch housing into J 33386-A end play tool as indicated. If the thrush washer will not fit into J 33386-A end play tool , select the next size smaller thrust washer and recheck.
  16. Use a feeler gauge in order to measure the clearance between J 33386-A end play tool and the thrust washer (630).
    17. • If the clearance is less than 0.1521 mm (0.006 in), use the current size thrust washer.
    • If the clearance is 0.1521 mm (0.006 in) or more, select the next size larger thrust washer and recheck.
    • Refer to the Bearing/Input Clutch Hub Selective Thrust Washer (630) Selection Guide in End Play Specifications .

  17. Remove J 33386-A end play tool .
  18. Adjust the collar on tool J 33381-A final drive remover and installer to the 4T65-E CLUTCH & DRUM setting. Make sure that the threaded rod is fully loosened.
  19. Install J 33381-A final drive remover and installer into the input clutch housing (632).
  20. Tighten the threaded rod of J 33381-A final drive remover and installer until the rod is finger tight.
  21. Use J 33381-A final drive remover and installer in order to lift the input clutch housing assembly (632). The sprag clutch assemblies will also be attached.
  22. Remove the assembly (632) from the case.

  23. Position the transmission so that the oil pan is facing down.
  24. Remove J 44472 end play checking tool .

    25. Object Number: 630819 Size: SH
  25. Remove the final drive sun gear (697).

    26. Object Number: 630822 Size: SH
  26. Remove the parking gear (696) and the parking gear thrust bearing (695).

    27. Object Number: 630823 Size: SH
  27. Remove the final drive sun gear shaft (689).
