The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Some customers may comment that the Service Engine Soon (SES) Light is on. When diagnosing with a Tech 2, a PCM DTC P0404 (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR) Open Position Performance) code set is found. Engineering has performed testing on this issue and found that repeated cold weather short duration (start/stop/start/stop) engine running typically associated with the movement of the vehicle from the assembly plant to the dealer and the subsequent movement of a vehicle around a dealer's storage lot prior to delivery to the customer, may result in the accumulation of moisture in the EGR system. This moisture could potentially build-up on the EGR Pintle seat interface in the intake and may cause the EGR valve to be susceptible to icing under certain outside temperature conditions. This condition usually occurs within a few hundred miles of delivery.

This condition will correct itself when the vehicle is normally driven and the engine is brought up to normal operating temperatures. Perform the proper SI diagnoses. If the condition is not present, all checks including wiring are good and the condition of code set follows the above criteria, do not replace the EGR valve. If the condition is not present and the vehicle has been driven normally, bring the engine up to operating temperature; the condition has most likely already corrected itself.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
