Subject: Upcoming Noncompliance Recall 05059 - Parking Brake Lever Slip
Model: 2005 Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Buick Terraza and Saturn Relay
To: All Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick and Saturn Dealers
Attention: Dealer Operator, General Manager, Sales Manager, Used Car Manager, Service Manager, Parts Manager and Warranty Administrator
Based on information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) web site, the media may report that General Motors will be announcing a safety recall involving certain 2005 Chevrolet Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Buick Terraza and Saturn Relay model vehicles.
Some vehicles built at Doraville Assembly from February 3, 2005 to February 18, 2005 and from March 15, 2005 to March 29, 2005 may have a rear brake caliper assembly with an undersized knurled ramp shaft that can allow the pressed-fit park brake lever to slip when the parking brake system is applied. If the lever slips, the parking brake may not fully apply and unexpected vehicle movement could occur.
Also, if the lever slips, the brake pad may not release away from the rotor when the parking brake system is released, resulting in parking brake drag when the vehicle is driven. However, normal operation of the rear service brakes, tires, and wheels will not be adversely affected by heat generated from the parking brake drag.
To correct this condition, dealers will inspect for parking brake lever slippage at each rear brake caliper and replace the caliper if lever slippage is identified. These repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
Approximately 19,000 vehicles are involved. GM is working with its suppliers to obtain the required parts as quickly as possible. Dealers will be notified when a date is established for customer notification.
GMVIS/AS400 information for this recall will not be available until the recall bulletin is released to dealers.
