Removal Procedure

When replacing battery cables, be sure to use replacement cables that are the same type, gage and length.

  1. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

  2. Object Number: 161298  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the battery positive cable from the battery.
  4. Remove the battery (positive) cable nut and cable from the underhood electrical center.
  5. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable bolt from the inner fender.
  6. Remove the battery cable conduit retainers from the lower tie bar.

  8. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable nut and cable from the transaxle stud.
  9. Remove the starter motor BAT terminal nut from the starter motor.
  10. Remove the battery positive cable from the starter motor BAT terminal.
  11. Remove the battery ground (negative) and battery positive cables from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery ground (negative) and the battery positive cables to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 368798  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the battery positive cable and nut to the starter motor BAT terminal.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the starter motor BAT terminal nut to 10 N·m (89  lb in).

  5. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and nut to the transaxle stud.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the battery ground (negative) cable nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the battery cable conduit retainers to the lower tie bar.
  8. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and bolt to the inner fender.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the battery ground (negative) cable inner fender bolt to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  10. Install the battery positive cable and nut to the underhood electrical center.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the battery positive cable underhood electrical center nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  12. Install the battery positive cable and bolt to the battery.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the battery terminal bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  14. Install the battery ground (negative) cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
