Did you perform the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn the ignition, to the ON position.
  2. Place the gear selector lever to the REVERSE position.

Do both backup lamps illuminate?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring System

Go to Step 3

Is only one lamp inoperative?

Go to Step 7

  1. Disconnect the Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch harness connector.
  2. With a test lamp connected to ground, probe the battery positive supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 5

Install a fused jumper between the PNP switch battery positive voltage supply circuit and the backup lamps voltage supply circuit.

Do the backup lamps illuminate?

Go to Step 9

Repair a short to ground or open in the backup lamps voltage supply circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring System.

Repair the open, or poor connection in the inoperative backup lamp voltage supply circuit or the ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open, or short to ground in the battery positive voltage supply circuit of the PNP switch. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Apply the park brake.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  3. Place the gear shift selector lever in the REVERSE position.

Do both backup lamps illuminate?

Are both backup lamps inoperative?

  1. Disconnect the PNP switch harness connector.
  2. Using a test lamp connected to ground, probe the battery positive voltage supply circuit of the PNP switch.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 5

Install a fused jumper across the battery positive voltage supply circuit and the backup lamps supply voltage circuit of the PNP switch connector. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Did the backup lamps illuminate?

  1. Remove the inoperative backup lamp bulb.
  2. Using a test lamp, probe between the supply voltage circuit and the ground circuit of the inoperative backup lamp bulb socket.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the tail lamp connector of the inoperative backup lamp.
  2. Using a test lamp connected to ground, probe the backup lamp supply voltage circuit of the tail lamp connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Using a test lamp connected to battery positive voltage, probe the backup lamp ground circuit of the tail lamp connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the backup lamp relay connector.
  2. Install a fused jumper between the battery positive voltage supply circuit and the backup lamp relay coil voltage supply circuit.
  3. Using a test lamp connected to ground, probe the backup lamp relay coil voltage supply circuit at the backup lamp relay connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Using a test lamp connected to ground, probe the backup lamp relay switch side voltage supply circuit.

Using a test lamp connected to battery positive voltage, probe the backup lamp relay coil side ground supply circuit.

Install a fused jumper between the backup lamp relay switch side voltage supply circuit and the backup lamp relay switched voltage supply circuit.
