Subject: | Service VME - Alarm Goes Off When Unlocking Door |
Models: | . |
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
Feedback from customers told us they were dissatisfied with vehicles that did not have lock/unlock verification when using RKE, remote keyless entry. This feature was only available from the MALL module 4, which only came on vehicles equipped with UA6, theft deterrent. In order to satisfy more customers, MALL 4 was installed on non-UA6 equipped vehicles starting in December 2002. This provided lock/unlock confirmation via horn. In late April 2003 Circuit 301, from the Mall module to the DRL was added to non-UA6 equipped vehicles, which enabled lock/unlock confirmation via horn and lights. These changes have resulted in occasional confusion at both the dealer and customer level. Vehicles with MALL 4, but not UA6 have a small glitch. If someone locks the vehicle with RKE and attempts to unlock it with the key, the alarm system goes off even though the vehicle technically does not have theft deterrent. The unlock button on the key fob will stop the alarm. Dealers diagnosing this often believe it is a mis-build, but it is not. In order to eliminate the confusion, MALL 4 with non-UA6 vehicles was eliminated in production the week of 7/21/03. If a customer raises this concern, there are several possible solutions:
First: Explain to the customer that if they lock with RKE, they must unlock with RKE. Basically they have limited theft deterrence at no cost. They do not have a key cylinder tied into the alarm, nor do they have a panic button on their key fob. If this is not satisfactory, the theft deterrent may be disabled using the customization procedures in the owners manual for MALL 4. The specific instructions are on page 2-66 for Montana, and 2-69 for Venture and Silhouette. Lock/unlock confirmation will still be available via horn and lights, but theft deterrence will be disarmed. It is not necessary to replace the Mall module.
The first printing of the 2004 owners manual incorrectly shows lock/unlock confirmation available on MALL 3.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
