Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Go to Step 2

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Shift the gear selector lever to the REVERSE position and then to the PARK position.

Do the backup lamps turn on in REVERSE and turn off in PARK?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Disconnect the park/neutral position (PNP) switch.

Do the backup lamps turn OFF?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 4

Repair the short to battery positive voltage in the backup lamps supply voltage circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 6

Adjust or replace the PNP switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Adjustment or Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T65-E.

Are the backup lamps illuminated?

Using a test lamp connected to ground, probe the backup lamp relay coil voltage supply circuit.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Repair a short to battery positive voltage in the backup lamp relay coil voltage supply circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair a short to battery positive voltage in the backup lamps switched voltage supply circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the backup lamp relay. Refer to Relay Replacement in Wiring Systems.
