Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 1263236 Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air filter housing bolts.
  3. Remove the air filter housing assembly.

    4. Object Number: 1263802 Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector.
  5. Remove the breather tube from the valve cover.
  6. Remove the air intake tube from the throttle body.

    7. Object Number: 1263807 Size: SH
  7. Remove the forward engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  8. Disconnect the clips at the upper front timing belt cover.
  9. Remove the torque roll axis cover bolt.
  10. Remove the torque roll axis cover.

  11. Remove the right front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  12. Remove the right front wheel splash shield.

    13. Notice: Refer to Belt Dressing Notice in the Preface section.

  13. Remove the serpentine accessory drive belt. Refer to Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement .
  14. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts.
  15. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

  16. Remove the front timing belt cover bolts.
  17. Remove the front timing belt cover.

Adjustment Procedure

    Object Number: 1263809 Size: SH
  1. Rotate the crankshaft at least one full turn clockwise using the crankshaft gear bolt.
  2. Align the mark on the crankshaft gear with the notch at the bottom of the rear timing belt cover.
  3. Align the camshaft gear timing marks. Use the exhaust gear mark for the exhaust gear and the intake gear mark for the intake gear, since the gears are interchangeable.

  4. Loosen the automatic tensioner bolt. To tighten the belt tension, turn the hes-key tab counterclockwise.
  5. Rotate the automatic tensioner hex-key tab clockwise until the adjust arm pointer of the timing belt automatic tensioner is aligned to the notch in the timing belt automatic tensioner bracket.

    6. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Tighten the automatic tensioner bolt.

    7. Tighten
    Tighten the tensioner bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Rotate the crankshaft two full turns clockwise using the crankshaft gear bolt.
  8. Check the automatic tensioner pointer.

  9. When the adjust arm pointer of the timing belt automatic tensioner is aligned with the notch on the timing belt automatic tensioner bracket, the belt is tensioned correctly.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 1263808 Size: SH
  1. Install the front timing belt cover.

    2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  2. Install the front timing belt cover bolts.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt cover bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  3. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  4. Install the crankshaft pulley bolts.

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  5. Install the serpentine accessory drive belt. Refer to Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement .
  6. Install the right front wheel splash shield.
  7. Install the right front wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .

    8. Object Number: 1263807 Size: SH
  8. Install the torque roll axis cover.
  9. Install the torque roll axis cover bolt.

    10. Tighten
    Tighten the axis cover bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  10. Connect the clips at the upper front timing belt cover.
  11. Install the forward engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .

  12. Install the air intake tube from the throttle body.
  13. Install the breather tube from the valve cover.
  14. Connect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector.

    15. Object Number: 1263236 Size: SH
  15. Install the air filter housing assembly.
  16. Install the air filter housing bolts.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.
