Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1263918  Size: SH
  1. Remove the rack and pinion steering assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
  2. Remove the dust cover and the retaining ring from the lower end of the housing.
  3. Important: If the stub shaft is not held, damage to the pinion teeth will occur.

  4. While holding the stub shaft with a wrench, remove the locknut from the pinion.

  6. With the gear centered, mark the location of the stub shaft notch on the housing to aid in properly installing the pinion and valve assembly.
  7. Remove the dust cover and the upper housing retaining ring.

  8. Object Number: 1263920  Size: SH
  9. Remove the valve and pinion assembly from the stub shaft housing.

  10. Object Number: 1263921  Size: SH
  11. Remove the stub shaft dust seal, the stub shaft bearing annulus assembly.

  13. Remove the pinion bearing from the stub shaft housing.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Install the pinion bearing to the stub shaft housing.

  2. Object Number: 1263921  Size: SH
  3. Install the stub shaft dust seal to the stub shaft bearing annulus assembly.

  4. Object Number: 1263920  Size: SH
  5. Install the valve and pinion assembly to the stub shaft housing.

  6. Object Number: 1263919  Size: SH
  7. Install the dust cover and upper housing retaining ring.

  8. Object Number: 1263918  Size: SH
  9. Install the locknut to the pinion.
  10. Install the dust cover and retaining ring to the lower end of the housing.
  11. Install the rack and pinion steering assembly to the vehicle.
  12. Perform the rack and pinion preload bearing adjustment. Refer to Rack and Pinion Preload Bearing Adjustment . Ensure the valve and pinion assembly is fully seated in the housing in order for the notch in the stub shaft and the mark on the housing to line up.
