Driver Seat Belt Warning

Caution: To help avoid personal injury from unrepaired crash damage to a restraint system, perform the seat belt check for each seat belt system. Replace the seat belt system if there is any doubt about the condition of system components.

The driver's seat belt incorporates a seat belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster and a chime to remind the driver if the seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is turned ON. The seat belt warning chime will go out after about 6 seconds, but the seat belt warning lamp will illuminate until the seat belt is fastened.

Three-Point Front Seat Belt

The front seat belts have 4 different options.

Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR)

Caution: Perform this test in an area clear of other vehicles and/or obstructions. Do not conduct this test on the open road. A large, empty parking lot is suitable. Failure to observe this precaution may result in damage to the vehicle and possible personal injury.

The ELR seat belt is always unlocked, allowing the passenger freedom of movement, except in emergencies such as rapid deceleration, rapid acceleration, or hard cornering maneuvers.

Webbing Locking Retractor (WLR)

The WLR seat belt is mostly the same as the ELR seat belt that is always unlocked, allowing the passenger freedom of movement. In emergencies such as rapid deceleration, rapid acceleration, or hard cornering maneuvers, it locks the retractor and clamp seat belt webbing additionally.

Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) with Pretensioner

Caution: When carrying an undeployed inflatable restraint seat belt pretensioner:

   • Do not carry the seat belt pretensioner by the wires or connector.
   • Carry the seat belt pretensioner by the piston tube, keeping hands and fingers away from the cable.
   • Make sure the open end of the seat belt pretensioner piston tube points away from you and other people.
   • Do not cover the seat belt pretensioner piston tube opening with your hand.
Failure to observe these guidelines may result in personal injury.

At normal conditions, this type of seat belt operates as the ELR seat belt. This seat belt contains an electronically controlled pyrotechnic retractor, pretensioner, which reduces seat belt slack when it is activated in a head-on or angled front collision. The front seat belt must be replaced after an accident that causes its activation.

Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) with Pretensioner and Load Limiter

These type of seat belts are standard for western Europe. Normally the seat belt operates in the ELR with pretensioner. However, when it is activated, the pretensioner reduces belt slack, and the load limiter will give some buffer for the reaction of the body for safety.

Three-Point Rear Outboard Seat Belt

The rear outboard seat belt has 3 optional parts. Refer to Three-Point Front Seat Belt for details.

    • Emergency locking retractor (ELR)
    • Emergency locking retractor (ELR) with pretensioner
    • Emergency locking retractor (ELR) with pretensioner and load limiter

Two-Point Lap Rear Center Seat Belt

The 2-point lap rear center seat belt is a single continuous length of webbing. The webbing is routed from the anchor through the latch plate and into a single buckle.

Operational and Functional Checks

Caution: The following precautions must be observed to avoid damage to the seat belt system. If these precautions are not taken, the seat belt system may not provide proper restraint in the unlikely event of an accident and may result in personal injury.

   • Keep any sharp and potentially damaging objects away from the belts.
   • Avoid bending or damaging any portion of the buckle.
   • Do not bleach or dye the belt webbing (use only mild soap and water).
   • When installing the seat belt anchor bolts, start bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
   • Do not attempt any repairs on the retractor mechanisms or the covers. Replace defective assemblies with new ones.
   • Replace any belts that are cut or damaged in any way.
   • Do not install anything in the trim panel, or between the trim and the height adjuster and/or the turning loop that will obstruct the movement of the seat belt.

  1. Inspect all seat anchor bolts and screws in order to verify that they are secure.

  2. Inspect the seat belt buckle. The buckle must lock and unlock easily.
  3. After inserting the latch into the buckle, tug sharply on the belt. The buckle must remain locked.
  4. Fully extend the shoulder belt portion to make sure that there is no twisting or tears in the belt.
  5. Let the shoulder belt retract fully. The belt should retract easily.

Child Seat Tether Anchor

There are 3 child seat tether anchors located in rear back panel. It is provided to hold the child seat firmly.
