The brake fluid level switch monitors the level of brake fluid in the master cylinder. When the instrument panel cluster (IPC) sees the brake fluid level switch input grounded, it turns ON the Red Brake Warning indicator and sends a serial data message to the electronic brake control module (EBCM) that the brake fluid level is low.
The ignition is ON.
Low brake fluid is detected.
• | The EBCM disables the Antilock Brake System (ABS)/Traction Control System (TCS) dynamic rear proportion (DRP) and Vehicle Stability Enhancement System (VSES). |
• | The ABS indicator turns ON. |
• | The Traction Control indicator turns ON. |
• | The Red Brake Warning indicator turns ON. |
• | The condition for the DTC is no longer present. |
• | The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles. |
Ensure the master cylinder reservoir is at the proper fluid level.

Ignition ON, observe the scan tool IPC Brake Fluid parameter. The reading should be OK when fluid is at the proper level, and low when the fluid is below the minimum level.
⇒ | If low, refer to Brake Fluid Loss . |
Important: This test should only be performed if brake fluid is not low.
⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance. |
⇒ | If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC. |
⇒ | If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC. |
⇒ | If greater than specified value, replace the brake fluid level switch. |
