Subject: | Squeak Squawk Moan Noise From Steering Column When Turning |
This PI has been revised because Engineering is not looking for anymore vehicles at this time. Please discard PIT4270.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Squeak, squawk, or moan noise from the base of the steering column when turning. This noise can be intermittent and temperature sensitive. This noise can be caused by either of the following.
- The bearing on the intermediate shaft is not fully seated in the rubber boot at the base of the column.
- The bearing on the intermediate shaft is rotating within the rubber boot at the base of the column.
Recommendation/Instructions:
- Inspect the bearing at the base of the steering column, and make sure it is fully seated in the rubber boot. The Bearing must be fully seated below all 8 nubs. (See picture below of a fully seated bearing and the nubs).
- For concern 2 where the bearing is fully seated in the rubber boot, but is rotating within the boot, engineering is aware of the concern and is working on a fix. Until a fix becomes available, use Super Lube part number 12346241 (in Canada, 10953474)
or equivalent and lube between the bearing and the rubber boot. This will help to reduce the squawk noise from the bearing rubbing on the rubber boot. This PI will be updated when a fix becomes available.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
