APPROXIMATELY APRIL 17, 1982, THE ASSEMBLY PLANTS PRODUCING "B", "F" AND "G" CARS BEGAN INSTALLING SINGLE BED BEAD CATALYTIC CONVERTERS IN PLACE OF THE DUAL BEAD CATALYTIC CONVERTERS. IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER ON SUBJECT VEHICLES, YOU MUST DETERMINE WHAT TYPE OF CONVERTER THE VEHICLE HAS. THE DUAL BEDS HAVE A FRESH AIR SUPPLY PORT NEAR THE INLET END OF THE CONVERTER. VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE SINGLE BED BEAD CONVERTER (PRODUCED AFTER APRIL 17, 1982) CAN BE SERVICED USING STANDARD REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES AND LABOR TIMES. VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE DUAL BED BEAD CONVERTERS (PRODUCED BEFORE APRIL 17, 1982) MUST BE SERVICED USING THE SINGLE BED BEAD CONVERTERS AS DESCRIBED IN THIS BULLETIN. THE ONLY EXCEPTION TO THIS IS THE "F" CAR EQUIPPED WITH 5.0L (LG4) ENGINE AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THIS VEHICLE WILL CONTINUE TO USE THE DUAL BED BEAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER (P/N 8999830) FOR SERVICE AND PRODUCTION. REFER TO FIGURE 1 FOR CATALYTIC CONVERTER USAGE. CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (1) RAISE VEHICLE ON HOIST. (2) DISCONNECT AIR SUPPLY PIPE FROM CATALYTIC CONVERTER. ON "F" CARS REMOVE AND DISCARD AIR SUPPLY PIPE CLAMP AT THE EXHAUST PIPE. (3) DISCONNECT INTERMEDIATE EXHAUST PIPE FROM CONVERTER. (4) DISCONNECT CONVERTER HANGER AT CONVERTER. (5) REMOVE CLAMP FROM FRONT OF CONVERTER THEN REMOVE CONVERTER. (6) REVERSE REMOVAL PROCEDURE (EXCEPT FOR AIR SUPPLY PIPE) FOR INSTALLATION OF THE NEW SINGLE BED CATALYTIC CONVERTER. REFER TO FIGURES 1,2 AND 3 FOR PART NUMBERS AND INSTALLATION TORQUES. CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY MODIFICATION "G" CAR WITH 3.8L (229), 4.4L OR 5.0L WITHOUT H.D. (80 AMP) ALTERNATOR -REFER TO FIGURES 4 AND 5 (1) REMOVE AND DISCARD THE CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY PIPE, CHECK VALVE AND THE HOSE FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE. (2) CUT THE DIVERT HOSE FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE TO THE AIR CLEANER 100MM FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE AND REMOVE 30MM OF HOSE. (3) INSERT "Y" CONNECTOR, P/N 14031110, INTO THE CUT LENGTHS. (4) INSTALL HOSE, P/N 14045881, BETWEEN THE CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY PORT OF THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE AND "Y" CONNECTOR, TRIMMING THE HOSE AS REQUIRED. (5) INSTALL CLAMP, P/N 1470030, AT BOTH ENDS OF HOSE, P/N 14045881, AND TORQUE TO SPECIFICATIONS. (6) FOR "G" WAGONS AND EL CAMINOS WITH 4.4L OR 5.0L ENGINES AND FEDERAL EMISSIONS (NA5 OR NA6) RESET TIMING AS SPECIFIED BELOW: "G" WAGONS OR EL CAMINO WITH 4.4L BEFORE 2 BTC RESET TO AFTER 2 ATC "G" WAGONS OR EL CAMINO WITH 5.0L BEFORE 6 BTC REST TO AFTER 2 BTC (7) FOR VEHICLES THAT REQUIRED AN ENGINE TIMING CHANGE, INSTALL A NEW VEHICLE EMISSION CERTIFICATION LABEL. REFER TO PAGE 4 FOR DETAILS. (8) CLEAN AN AREA NEAR THE VEHICLE EMISSION CERTIFICATION LABEL WITH A DEGREASING TYPE CLEANING FLUID (NOT SOAP AND WATER) AND INSTALL THE SERVICE MODIFICATION LABEL, GMP-91. "F" CAR WITH 5.0L (LG4) AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - REFER TO FIGURE 6 (1) REMOVE AND DISCARD THE CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY PIPE, CHECK VALVE AND THE HOSE FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE. (2) CUT THE DIVERT HOSE NEAR THE MUFFLER AND REMOVE 30MM OF HOSE. (3) INSERT "Y" CONNECTOR, P/N 14031110, INTO THE CUT LENGTHS. (4) INSTALL HOSE, P/N 14045881, BETWEEN CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY PORT OF THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE AND "Y" CONNECTOR TRIMMING THE HOSE AS REQUIRED. (5) INSTALL CLAMP, P/N 1470030, AT BOTH ENDS OF HOSE, P/N 14045881 AND AT BOTH ENDS OF THE HOSE FROM THE 'Y' CONNECTOR TO THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE AND TORQUE TO SPECIFICATIONS. (6) CLEAN AN AREA NEAR THE VEHICLE EMISSION CERTIFICATION LABEL WITH A DEGREASING TYPE CLEANING FLUID (NOT SOAP AND WATER) AND INSTALL THE SERVICE MODIFICATION LABEL, GMP-91. "B" CAR WITH 3.8L (229), 4.4L, 5.0L AND 5.7L WITHOUT H.D. (80 AMP) ALTERNATOR - REFER TO FIGURES 7 & 8 (1) REMOVE HOSE FROM THE CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY CHECK VALVE. LEAVE THIS HOSE ATTACHED TO THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE. (2) REMOVE AND DISCARD CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY PIPE AND CHECK VALVE. (3) CUT THE DIVERT HOSE FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE TO THE AIR CLEANER 100MM FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE AND REMOVE 30MM OF HOSE. (4) INSERT "Y" CONNECTOR, P/N 14031110, INTO CUT LENGTHS. (5) USING EXISTING HOSE FROM CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY, CUT AS REQUIRED AND INSTALL ON THE "Y" CONNECTOR AND RETAIN WITH CLAMP, P/N 1470030, AND TORQUE TO SPECIFICATIONS. (6) CLEAN AN AREA NEAR THE VEHICLE EMISSION CERTIFICATION LABEL WITH A DEGREASING TYPE CLEANING FLUID (NOT SOAP AND WATER) AND INSTALL THE SERVICE MODIFICATION LABEL, GMP-91. "B" CAR WITH 4.4L, 5.0L, 5.7L AND "G" CAR WITH 4.4L, 5.0L AND H.D. (80 AMP) ALTERNATOR - REFER TO FIGURE 8 (1) REMOVE HOSE FROM THE CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY CHECK VALVE. LEAVE THIS HOSE ATTACHED TO THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE. (2) REMOVE AND DISCARD CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY PIPE AND CHECK VALVE. (3) CUT THE DIVERT HOSE FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE TO THE AIR CLEANER 170MM FROM THE AIR MANAGEMENT VALVE AND REMOVE 30MM OF HOSE. (4) INSERT "Y" CONNECTOR, P/N 14031110, INTO CUT LENGTHS. (5) USING EXISTING HOSE FROM THE CONVERTER AIR SUPPLY, CUT AS REQUIRED AND INSTALL ON THE "Y" CONNECTOR AND RETAIN WITH CLAMP, P/N 1470030, AND TORQUE TO SPECIFICATIONS. (6) CLEAN AN AREA NEAR THE VEHICLE EMISSION CERTIFICATION LABEL WITH A DEGREASING TYPE CLEANING FLUID (NOT SOAP AND WATER) AND INSTALL THE SERVICE MODIFICATION LABEL, GMP91. VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION LABELS (FOR FEDERAL AND HIGH ALTITUDE "G" WAGONS AND EL CAMINO WITH 4.4L AND 5.0L ENGINES ONLY AND WITHOUT H.D. ALTERNATOR) VEHICLES THAT REQUIRE A TIMING CHANGE MUST ALSO HAVE THE EXISTING VEHICLE EMISSION CERTIFICATION LABEL REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH ONE (1) OF THE THREE (3) NEW LABELS LISTED BELOW.
