The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

The owners manual and SI are incorrect in description and operation for the automatic dimming mirror with compass, temperature display and map lights. There are two mirrors available. They are DC4 and DF8. Below will describe how they are equipped and the functionality of both.

DC4 Mirror:

This mirror has a manual day/night dimming feature and no compass or temperature display. This mirror will also be used when equipped with Onstar (UE1) option.

DF8 Mirror:

This mirror has a auto day/night dimming feature and a display from compass and temperature. Below is a explanation to assist with the operation of the mirror. There are only two switches on the front of the mirror and they are not labeled. They are used for turning the map lights on and off as well as turning the automatic dimming mirror on and off, calibrating the compass, turning the temperature and compass display on and off and changing the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius. There is no specific button, labeled "on/off" as the owners manual and service information leads you to believe. Below is the correct procedures to operate the mirror.

1. To turn the map lights on and off press and release the appropriate switch (left or right).
2. To turn the automatic dimming mirror off press and hold the left button for approximately 5 seconds and release when the green light turns off (key on). Repeat to turn back on. Automatic dimming feature will default to on with every key cycle.
3. To calibrate the compass hold the left button down for approximately 8 seconds and release when C is displayed and follow the calibration instructions outlined in bulletin 03-08-48-005A or the owners manual.
4. The right button will cycle the temperature display from off, on, Fahrenheit and Celsius. To cycle through the modes hold the right button down for approximately 4 seconds and release when display changes.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.
