Steering Column Jacket Replacement Tilt Column

Tools Required

J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.




1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
2. Remove the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
3. If necessary, remove the linear shift assemby. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .

Remove the electrical BTSI actuator.

4. Remove the ignition switch and lock housing. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
5. Remove the upper intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
6. Remove the lower shaft bearing assembly.



7. Remove the pivot pins (1) using J 21854-01 .



8. Pull the tilt arm in order to disengage the steering wheel lock shoes from the dowel pins (2) in the steering column support assembly.



9. Remove the steering column housing assembly (1).
10. Remove the steering shaft assembly.

1. Install the steering shaft assembly into the steering column housing.
2. Install the steering column housing assembly (1).



3. Using the tilt lever, position the lock shoes to the dowel pins (2).
4. Rotate the tilt head assembly (1) in order to align the holes for the pivot pins.



5. Install the 2  new pivot pins by performing the following steps:

5.1.	Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with, GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723).

5.2.	Press the pivot pins (1) until the pins are firmly seated.

5.3.	Stake the pivot pins at three new locations (1).




6. Install the lower shaft bearing assembly.
7. Install the upper intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
8. Install the ignition switch and lock housing. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
9. If necessary, install the linear shift assemby. Refer to Linear Shift Assembly Replacement .
10. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement .
11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
