Subject: | Poor Remote Keyless Entry Range at Times |
Models: | 2008 Chevrolet Colorado |
This PI was superceded to update Recommendation/Instructions. Please discard PIT4459A.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment that the vehicle has poor or no Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) range at times especially when they are just getting out of the vehicle after turning the engine off. When the vehicle is turned off, sometimes the ONSTAR module does
not go to sleep quick enough and the RKE performance may be severely affected. The OnStar module may be giving off EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) that is near the same frequency as the RKE transmitter. The routing of the RKE antenna may be too close
to the OnStar module, which is then picking up the EMI signals. This may be preventing the BCM from receiving the RKE transmitter signal.
Recommendation/Instructions:
While duplicating the concern, remove the 10amp OnStar fuse from the UBEC. With the fuse removed, the RKE functions should work with no intermittent operation or range issues. If the complaint is still duplicated with the OnStar fuse removed, then the
following procedure is not needed.
- Secure the screws on the case of the Onstar Module (VCIM).
• | A - Access the Onstar Module (VCIM) through the access opening on the passenger side of the IP. Refer to the image above. |
• | B - Once the VCIM is exposed through the IP opening, secure the screws on the VCIM case. The VCIM does not need to be removed for this procedure. Only secure the screws called out
as number 1 in the image above. Do not expect a full rotation of these screws when tightening. Just snug the screw tight. Typically a 1/4 turn or less. |
• | C - Re-evaluate the customers concern with the OnStar fuse installed. If the concern is still present, continue to step 2. |
- Re-route the antenna away from the Onstar Module per the photos below. Follow steps A through D below so the antenna is mounted and secured to the IP brace behind the right HVAC deflector.
• | A - Access the BCM antenna connector and trace the antenna wire and loosen from its existing position. |
• | B - Starting from the BCM, route the antenna wire to avoid damage and snap the RKE antenna into the hole on the passenger knee bolster bracket. (See Illustration
above) |
• | C - Then run the route the wire and secure the RKE antenna to IP frame with tape (See Illustration above) |
• | D - Finally snap RKE antenna into the hole near outer HVAC vent. (See Illustration above) |
- Be sure the antenna connector is fully seated in to the BCM.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
