Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer
Removal Procedure
- Install a drain pan under the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Caution in the Preface section.
- Disconnect the power steering hose assembly from the power steering pump.
- Raise the vehicle and support with suitable safety stands. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the power steering hose assembly bracket retaining bolts.
- Remove the power steering hose assembly to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
- Disconnect the power steering hose assembly from the power steering gear.
- Remove the power steering hose assembly from the vehicle.
Caution: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.
- Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports of any debris.
Installation Procedure
- Install the power steering hose assembly to the vehicle.
1.2. | Remove the power steering gear oil seals from the power steering gear using
J 44586
. |
| Caution: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.

1.3. | Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports of any debris. |
1.4. | Install the power steering gear oil seals to the power steering gear using
J 44586
. |
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the power steering hose assembly to the power steering gear bolt and tighten to
12 N·m (106 lb in).
- Install the power steering hose assembly clip retaining bolts and tighten to
9 N·m (79 lb in).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the power steering hose assembly to the power steering pump. Tighten the power steering hose connection to
25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
- Fill the power steering pump reservoir to the appropriate level.
- Bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding.

Removal Procedure
- Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
- Remove the engine protection shield. Refer to
Engine Protection Shield Replacement.
- Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.
- Disconnect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose (1) from the power steering pump and power steering fluid reservoir
assembly.
- Remove the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose bracket bolts (2).
- Remove the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose retaining plate bolt (1).
- Disconnect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose (3) from the steering gear and remove it from the vehicle.
- Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose ports at the steering gear of any debris.
- Transfer any parts as needed.
Installation Procedure
- Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose (3) to the vehicle and connect it to the steering gear.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose retaining plate bolt (1) and tighten to
12 N·m (106 lb in).
- Install the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose bracket bolts (2) and tighten to
9 N·m (80 lb in).
- Connect the power steering gear inlet and outlet hose (1) to the power steering pump and power steering fluid reservoir assembly.
Tighten the fitting to
25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
- Install the engine protection shield. Refer to
Engine Protection Shield Replacement.
- Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding.
