J-44228-A and EN-47945 Valve Spring Compressor Tools May Not Fit Some Cylinder Heads - keywords 05-06-01-037 adjuster cam camshaft engine follower hole lash lifter oil replacement rocker seal special

This PI has been revised to include a valve spring removal procedure using a 3.5L Saturn Vue valve spring compressor. Please discard PIP3849.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

The J-44228-A valve spring compressor is designed to mount directly to the cylinder head as shown below. The EN-47945 valve spring compressor outlined in 05-06-01-037 is also designed to mount in this location. However, it may not be possible to mount these tools in this location on engines manufactured from 2/23/2006 - 6/9/2006 due to missing bolt holes.

If this is encountered and cam follower or lash adjuster replacement is necessary, it will be necessary to follow the Valve Rocker Arm and Valve Lash Adjuster Replacement procedure in SI instead of the procedure outlined in 05-06-01-037.

If valve seal or spring replacement is necessary, the Valve Stem Oil Seal and Valve Spring Replacement procedure in SI can still be followed but use EN-46335 valve spring compressor instead of the J-44228-A valve spring compressor that is called out.

Important: Make sure that the EN-46335 does not contact the lower cam bearing journal surfaces when compressing the springs or cam bearing journal damage could occur. This is important when compressing any of the springs, especially the #1 exhaust valve spring that is closest to the front of the engine since there is a cam journal on each side of this spring.

Notice: The EN-46335 valve spring compressor shown below is a special tool for the 3.5L engine (RPO L66) used in the Saturn Vue.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
