This PI is being superseded to change recommendations and add model years. Please discard PIP3718A.
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment on a high pitched squeal, squeak or whistle noise in the front end of the vehicle. This is usually on very low mileage vehicles. This noise may be coming from the left output shaft seal in the front axle assembly. The lip of
the seal may be folded at the axle output shaft. This may be visible, depending on what part of the seal is affected. This noise should not be mistaken for a wheel bearing issue.
Recommendation/Instructions:
- Using a Q-tip or other small applicator, apply a small amount of axle lubricant or wheel bearing grease to the lip of the seal where it rides on the left output shaft. Rotate the left front wheel by hand a few times to allow the lubricant to work
in, and the noise should be eliminated.
- If the condition returns after a road test, replace the front axle left output shaft seal, with PN 12471618 (or newer).
Care should be taken not to fold the lip of the seal during installation of the seal to the axle assembly, or during installation of the output shaft through the seal. The seal may be damaged if proper procedures are not followed, resulting in a possible
comeback.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
