Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the engine crank?

Is the security indicator flashing?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Crank Request Signal parameter in the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) data list.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display Yes?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 13

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the Starter Relay Command parameter in the ECM/PCM data list.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Does the scan tool display Yes?

Go to Step 7

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Verify that the transmission is in Park or Neutral.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the TR Sw. parameter in the transmission control module (TCM) data list.

Does the scan tool display Park or Neutral?

Turn the ignition switch to the START position.

Do you hear the STRTR relay click?

Go to Step 10

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the STRTR relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STRTR relay coil and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STRTR relay coil and the control circuit of the STRTR relay.
  2. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 17

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the STRTR relay.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STRTR relay switch and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a 30-amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the STRTR relay switch and the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit.

Does the engine crank?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the ECM/PCM harness connector.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the crank voltage circuit of the ECM/PCM and a good ground.
  4. Turn the ignition to the START position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Test the starter solenoid crank voltage circuit for a high resistance or open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs.
