The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms in the PI.

Pop or snap noise from the rear of the vehicle during aggressive acceleration or deceleration maneuvers. The noise may also occur during torque direction change such as shifting from drive to reverse. The noise may be a one time or multiple event.

The noise is caused by a small amount of relative motion between the axle tube(s) and the center section. This can be confirmed by applying a dab of thick paint or nail polish at the interface joint between both tubes and the housing. Drive the vehicle to duplicate the condition, and then observe to see if the paint or nail polish is cracked. Replacing the axle housing assembly will resolve the noise. It is not necessary to replace the entire axle assembly.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.
