02 Chevrolet , GMC and Oldsmobile Mid-Sized Utilities Supplement to Service Bulletin 04-02-32-007 Steering Noise When Turning - kw 04-02-32-007 GMT360 GMT370 gear moan groan whine

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.

Service steering gear part number 88965356, listed in bulletin 04-02-32-007 may not accept the exiting tie rod ends. In the 2002 model year, there was a change in production of the steering gear. The 1st design had a 14 mm tie rod end diameter. Sometime in the 2002 model year, the tie rod end diameters were changed to a 2nd design with a 16mm thread diameter.

Prior to performing bulletin 04-02-32-007 on a 2002 model year vehicle, inspect the tie rod end shaft diameter. If the vehicle has a 14mm shaft diameter, the new steering gear part number 88965356 will not work. Do not order the tie rod ends for a 16mm steering gear. The knuckle diameter where the tie rod mounts is also a larger diameter. This steering rack was designed for vehicles with a 16mm diameter shaft and a 16mm ID tie rod end. There is no plan to design an updated steering gear for vehicles with a 14mm shaft diameter. If the steering gear exhibits a concern, replaced the gear with current SPO stock designed for a 14mm shaft diameter. Bulletin 04-02-32-007 will be updated to eliminate 2002 model year vehicles.
