The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Product Safety Recalls 02032 and 03008 Driver's Side Air Bag Inflator Return Process Change.
Product Safety Recall Bulletins 02032 and 03008 were released in September 2002 and March 2003 respectively. At that time, the air bag inflator supplier established a toll free telephone number as part of a process to retrieve the undeployed inflators from dealers. The telephone number was included in the recall bulletins along with specific instructions for the handling of the defective inflators.
"FOR VEHICLES INVOLVED IN THIS RECALL, DO NOT FOLLOW THE NORMAL PROCEDURE OF DEPLOYING REMOVED AIR BAG MODULES. DEPLOYMENT OF AN AIR BAG MODULE REPLACED UNDER THIS RECALL COULD CAUSE THE INFLATOR TO FRACTURE, AND COULD RESULT IN SEVERE INJURY FROM METAL AND PLASTIC DEBRIS."
Please be advised that the toll free telephone number currently in the bulletins is no longer in service. Until a new telephone number can be activated and the recall bulletins updated in SI, dealers should store the removed inflators in a secure, limited access location. Under no circumstances should one of these inflators be deployed locally as they are potentially dangerous and could cause severe injury.
Dealers will be notified via GM Administrative Message and Voice Mail when the supplier has re-established a proper return process.
This situation came to our attention due to a recent re-mailing of recall notification letters to the remaining customers who have not yet had the recall service procedures performed.
Note: This information is also available in DealerWorld under Messenger Message number WIR2006 dated 6/30/2006
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
