REAR SPRING NOISE (INSTALL RUBBER RING)

MODELS: 1988-89 C1-2, K1-2

This bulletin cancels and replaces GMC Truck Service Bulletin 88-T-163, dated September, 1988 to add the 1989 Model Year, the new part number, and to clarify the service procedure. All copies of 88-T-163 should be discarded.

Some 1988 C1-2 and K1-2 models may experience a noise from the rear leaf springs. This noise is more noticeable on rough roads. The cause of the noise is a metal to metal contact between the main leaf spring pack and the lower leaf spring.

This condition can be corrected by installing insulator on the lower leaf spring. The insulator fits on the tip of the leaf and should be installed with a rubber mallet. It may be necessary to raise the vehicle by the frame to install the inserts. A strip of plastic nylon is attached to one side of the insert. This side should face up toward the remaining spring leaves.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
