RWAL SENSITIVITY (GRAPHITE APPLICATION TO THE REAR LININGS)
Some owners of 1988 C3 and K3 models, equipped with dual rear wheels, may comment about a momentary rear tire 'chirp' during brake application with the vehicle unloaded. This condition is due to the new brake linings not being burnished. Once the linings have been burnished, this condition will be eliminated.
This condition does not indicate improper function of the rear wheel antilock system and will not affect the vehicle's directional stability during a stop.
This condition can be eliminated prior to burnishing of the brakes by applying a graphite spray solution P/N 993109 to the rear brake linings.
---------- o Raise vehicle until tires rotate freely.
o Remove tire/wheel, hub and drum assembly from both sides of the vehicle. (See Section 4B 1-14 of the 1988 C/K Service Manual.)
o With a clean cloth wipe the primary and secondary linings on both sides of the vehicle.
o Using the spray graphite solution, spray the primary and secondary linings until they have a wet shiny appearance.
o Allow the graphite solution to dry (the wet shiny appearance will fade away in 30-60 seconds).
o Reapply a second coat of the graphite solution to the primary and secondary linings and let dry.
o Reinstall the hub and drum assemblies and the tire/wheels.
o Lower vehicle.
o Test drive vehicle to verify correction and brake performance.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
