PARK BRAKE CABLE READJUSTMENT (ADDITION OF REINFORCEMENT)

SUBJECT: PARK BRAKE CABLE TENSION READJUSTMENT (ADDITION OF FRAME BRACKET REINFORCEMENT)

MODELS: 1988-91 C1, C2, OR C3 WITHOUT C5B

Owners of some 1988-1991 C Trucks with less than 15,000 lb. GVW may comment that they frequently have to adjust the park brake cable tension or that the cable is out of adjustment capability after a few adjustments. This condition may be caused by the frame bracket (left front cab mounting bracket) flexing and allowing the park brake cable tension to vary.

To correct this condition, a park brake cable stretch bracket (P/N 15659766) has been designed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Raise vehicle. Locate the frame bracket (left front cab mounting bracket) where the park brake cable is routed through the rear flange of the bracket. Clean the rearward face of the flange around the cable and adjacent frame area if necessary (Figure 1).

2. Position the park brake cable stretch bracket against both the rear flange of the frame bracket (cab mount) and the frame so that the notch cut in the stretch bracket partially encircles the park brake cable where it passes through the rear flange of the frame bracket.

3. Secure the bracket with a pair of locking pliers. Center punch all four holes - two on the rear flange of the frame bracket and two on the frame.

4. Remove the locking pliers and the park brake cable stretch bracket. Drill four 3/16 in. (4.76 mm) pilot holes at the previously center-punched locations.

5. Then, drill the pilot holes out to 23/64 in. (9.00 mm).

6. Bolt the bracket into position using four 5/16 in. x 3/4 in. (8 mm x 19 mm) bolts, nuts, and washers (Figure 1).

7. Torque the bolts to 6 - 8 ft. lbs. (8 - 12 N.m).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
