Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 55077  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transaxle/Transmission.
  3. Remove the flywheel from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  4. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the engine block.
  5. Clean the oil seal bore in the engine block.
  6. Clean the sealing surface of the crankshaft.

Installation Procedure

J 39084 Crankshaft Oil Seal Installer

    Important: 

       • Ensure that the crankshaft surface is clean and smooth. A dirty or rough surface may damage the seal lip when a new oil seal is installed.
       • The controls the position of the new oil seal.
            The crankshaft rear oil seal is placed into a new position. The new position provides a new surface for the oil seal to ride on.

  1. Inspect the following items:
  2. • The crankcase depression regulator (CDR) valve, refer to CDR Valve and Hoses Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
    • The crankcase ventilation system, refer to CDR Valve Test in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  3. Coat the sealing area of the crankshaft with clean engine oil.
  4. Coat the sealing area of the new seal with clean engine oil.
  5. Do not scratch or nick the sealing edge of the new oil seal.
  6. Important: Make sure that the spring cavity faces toward the engine.

  7. Install the oil seal onto the crankshaft.
  8. Use the J 39084 in order to install the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  9. Make that the J 39084 bottoms against the block and the crankshaft rear main bearing cap.
  10. Install the flywheel on the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  11. Install the transmission in the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transaxle/Transmission.
  12. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
