Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the battery
negative cables from the batteries. Refer to
Battery Cable Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Transaxle/Transmission.
- Remove the flywheel from the vehicle. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
.
- Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the engine block.
- Clean the oil seal bore in the engine block.
- Clean the sealing surface of the crankshaft.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 39084 Crankshaft Oil Seal
Installer
Important:
• | Ensure that the crankshaft surface is clean and smooth. A dirty
or rough surface may damage the seal lip when a new oil seal is installed. |
• | The controls the position of the new oil seal. |
| The crankshaft rear oil seal is placed into a new position. The new
position provides a new surface for the oil seal to ride on. |
- Inspect the following items:
• | The crankcase ventilation system, refer to
CDR Valve Test
in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65. |
- Coat the sealing area of the crankshaft with clean engine oil.
- Coat the sealing area of the new seal with clean engine oil.
- Do not scratch or nick the sealing edge of the new oil seal.
Important: Make sure that the spring cavity faces toward the engine.
- Install the oil seal onto the crankshaft.
- Use the J 39084
in
order to install the crankshaft rear oil seal.
- Make that the J 39084
bottoms against the block and the crankshaft rear main bearing cap.
- Install the flywheel on the crankshaft. Refer to
Engine Flywheel Replacement
.
- Install the transmission in the vehicle. Refer to
Transmission Replacement
in Transaxle/Transmission.
- Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to
Battery Cable Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
