Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 36857 Engine Lift Bracket


    Object Number: 206481  Size: MH
  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Hood Adjustment in Body Front End.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the left and the right front wheel housing panels. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  4. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

  5. Object Number: 339320  Size: SH
  6. Remove the engine access cover.
  7. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the engine. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls --6.5L-L65.
  8. Remove the drive belt from the pulleys. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .

  10. Remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  11. Remove the upper and lower radiator hoses from the engine block.
  12. Remove the surge tank if needed. Refer to Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  13. Disconnect the electrical harness from the engine assembly.

  15. Disconnect the ground wires from the engine assembly.

  16. Object Number: 317722  Size: SH
  17. Remove the electrical connection from the block heater.
  18. Disconnect the power steering lines from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering Systems.
  19. Remove the heater hoses from the engine block to the heater core.
  20. Disconnect the fuel lines to the fuel injection pump.
  21. Raise the vehicle (if necessary).
  22. Remove the starter from the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  23. Disconnect the oil cooler lines from the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  25. Remove the torque convertor bolts from the torque convertor through the starter opening.
  26. Lower the vehicle (if needed).
  27. Remove the turbocharger to gain access to the bolt holes at the back of the right cylinder head. Refer to Turbocharger .

  28. Object Number: 222260  Size: SH
  29. Install the J 36857 to the left rear cylinder head.
  30. Move the exhaust pipe out of the way as to not interfere with the engine removal.
  31. Attach a suitable lifting device to the rear corner of the right cylinder head, and the A/C mounting bracket.
  32. Support the transmission with a strap between the frame rails.
  33. Remove the bolts from the transmission to the engine.
  34. Remove the engine mount through bolt.
  35. Remove the engine assembly from the vehicle.
  36. Remove the flywheel from the engine assembly.
  37. Install the engine assembly on suitable engine stand.
  38. Remove the left accessory bracket from the engine.
  39. Remove the right accessory bracket from the engine.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 222260  Size: SH
  1. Install the left accessory bracket from the engine.
  2. Install the right accessory bracket from the engine.
  3. Install the J 36857 to the left rear cylinder head.
  4. Remove the engine assembly from the engine stand.
  5. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  6. Install the engine in the vehicle.
  7. Install the bolts from the transmission to the engine block.
  8. Install the engine mount through bolt.
  9. Remove the support for the transmission.
  10. Remove the lifting device from the engine assembly.
  11. Remove the J 36857 from the left rear cylinder head.
  12. Install the turbocharger to the engine assembly. Refer to Turbocharger in Turbocharger.
  13. Raise the vehicle (if necessary).

  15. Install the torque convertor bolts through the starter opening.
  16. Connect the oil cooler lines to the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  17. Install the starter on the engine block. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  18. Object Number: 317722  Size: SH
  19. Install the block heater electrical connector.
  20. Install the power steering lines to the power steering pump assembly. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Power Steering Systems.
  21. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel injection pump.
  22. Connect the electrical wiring harness to the engine.

  24. Connect the ground wiring to the engine assembly.
  25. Install the heater hose to the heater core.
  26. Install the radiator assembly in the vehicle. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  27. Install the surge tank (if removed). Refer to Surge Tank (Diesel) Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  28. Install the upper and lower radiator hoses to the vehicle.

  30. Install the engine access cover.
  31. Install the air cleaner assembly to the engine. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
  32. Refill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  33. Refill the crankcase with of motor oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  34. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  35. Install the hood assembly. Refer to Hood Adjustment in Body Front End.
  36. Perform TDC offset timing adjustment procedure. Refer to Fuel Injection Pump Top Dead Center Offset Adjustment in Engine Controls-6.5L-L65.
