Notice: Broken or deteriorated mounts can cause misalignment and destruction
of certain drive train components. When a single mount breaks, the remaining
mounts are subjected to abnormally high stresses.
- Inspect the engine mounts periodically. Replace the engine mounts if
they are damaged or deteriorated.
- Inspect the engine mounting brackets for the following conditions:
• | Replace the brackets, if necessary. |
- Inspect the mount fasteners for correct torque.
Refer to
Fastener Tightening Specifications
.
- Inspect the rubber parts for deterioration. Replace the rubber
parts, if necessary.
Notice: When raising or supporting the engine for any reason, do not use a jack
under the oil pan, any sheet metal, or the crankshaft pulley. Due to the small
clearance between the oil pan and the oil pump screen, jacking against the
oil pan may cause the pan to be bent against the pump screen. This will result
in a damaged oil pickup unit.
- Raise the engine in order to remove the weight from the mounts.
Raise the engine until there is a slight tension on the rubber cushion.
Observe both of the mounts while raising the engine.
- Replace the mount if any of the following conditions exist:
• | The hard rubber surface is covered with heat check cracks. |
• | The rubber cushion is separated from the metal plate of the mount. |
• | The rubber cushion is split through the center. |
- Complete the following steps if there is movement between the
metal plate of a mount and the attaching points:
7.2. | Tighten the bolts or the nuts that attach the mount to the engine,
the frame or the bracket. |

- Push up and pull down on the transmission tailshaft.
- Observe the transmission mounts.
Replace the mount if either of the following conditions exist:
• | The rubber cushion has separated from the metal plate of the mount. |
• | The mount is bottomed out. |
• | The mount is bottomed out if the tailshaft can be moved up but not down. |
- Inspect for relative movement between the metal plate of a mount
and the attaching point.
If relative movement exists, tighten the bolt or the nuts that attach
the mount to the transmission or to the crossmember.
