Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement Saginaw - 710 Model
Removal Procedure
- Remove the Pitman arm.
Refer to
Pitman Arm Replacement
in
Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
- Remove the Pitman shaft seal snap ring.
- Place a pan underneath the steering gear (9) to catch the oil.
- Remove the dust seal (1) using a seal puller or a pry tool.
- Remove the steel washer (2).
- Remove the oil seal (3) using a seal puller or a pry tool. Be
careful not to scratch the bore.
- Inspect the Pitman shaft (12) surfaces for roughness or pitting.
Replace the shaft if it is pitted.
- Inspect the housing for any burrs. Remove the burrs before installing
the new seal.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the new seal
(3) with power steering fluid.
- Install the seal on the pitman shaft (12). Use a suitable pipe
as a driver. If the service kit is a two-piece seal, be sure to place the
nylon inner ring into the recess of the outer seal face.
- Install the steel washer (2).
- Install the dust seal (1).
- Install the snap ring.
- Use the following steps in order to center the steering gear:
6.1. | Turn the steering wheel until it stops. |
6.2. | Turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction until it stops. |
Count the number of turns.
6.3. | Turn the steering wheel back one-half the number of turns counted
in the previous step. |
- Install the Pitman arm. Refer to

- Bleed the system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
