Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 290963  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  4. • For the automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement
    • in Automatic Transmissions/ Transaxle.
    • For automatic transmissions. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission/Transaxle.
  5. When removing the crankshaft rear oil seal from the cylinder block be careful not to nick the crankshaft sealing surface.
  6. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 38841 Rear Oil Seal Installer-7.4L

  1. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal as follows:
  2. • Lubricate the inner and outer diameter of the crankshaft rear oil seal with clean engine oil.
    • Use the J 38841 to install the crankshaft rear oil seal on the crankshaft.
    • Remove the J 38841 from the crankshaft.
  3. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  4. Install the transmission to the engine block.
  5. • For automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission/Transaxles.
    • For automatic transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission/Transaxles.
  6. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  7. Connect the battery negative cables to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
