You can use various methods and equipment to flush the
cooling system. If special equipment is used (such as a back flusher) follow
the manufacturer's instructions. However, always remove the thermostat
before flushing the system.
Flushing The Engine Oil Cooler
Flush the oil cooler in order to prevent premature engine wear when
the following conditions exist:
• | Foreign material is present in the oil cooler. |
• | The engine is damaged internally. |
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect
the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect the engine
oil cooler lines (2) from the mounting bracket.
- Place a drain pan under the engine oil cooler line connectors.
- Use a small pick-like
tool in order to rotate the clip out of the connector.
- Remove the cooler line quick connector clip.
- Remove the engine oil cooler lines from the engine.
Notice: Do not use more than 690 kPa (100psi) air to clean the cooler and lines.
Exceeding 690 kPa (100 psi) could damage the cooler or lines.
- Use clean solvent and compressed air in order to back-flush the oil
cooler and the lines.
- Flush the system. Use the same type of engine oil that is normally
circulated through the cooler.
- Remove the oil filter
(1). Discard the oil filter.
- Clean all of the components in a suitable solvent. Dry the components
with compressed air.
- Inspect the following parts for damage or distortion:
- Inspect the flow through the cooler. Replace the oil cooler if
the flow is restricted.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Make sure the connector clip engages all three slots in the connector.
Failure to properly install the connector clip could cause the oil cooler
line to come loose and cause damage to the engine.
- Use the following steps
in order to install the cooler line quick connector clip:
1.1. | Insert the connector clip into one of the three recesses in the
connector, using your thumb and forefinger. |
1.2. | With one end of the clip engaged in the connector slot, rotate
the clip around the connector until all three tabs snap into place. |
- Use the following steps in order to install the cooler line to
the quick connector:
2.1. | Fully insert the oil cooler line into the quick connector. |
Listen for a snap sound when the oil cooler line is assembled to the
quick connector.
2.2. | Pull forcefully on the fitting in order to check the insertion. |
- Connect the engine oil
cooler lines (2) to the mounting bracket.
- Install a new oil filter (1).
- Refill the engine oil to the correct level.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine.
- Inspect the system for leaks.
